The Writer's Consultant

"Phil O'Connor has all the needed smarts and toughness and real-world knowledge about both the art and the business of writing. I still follow the advice he gave me long ago and repeat it to my own students. He's a writer's writer, and he will encourage you to do your best."

- Jean Thompson, Finalist for the 1999 National Book Award

Have you finally finished (or almost finished) that fiction or nonfiction manuscript?

If so, congratulations!

But with that accomplishment comes a nagging thought—is my book really ready for publication? If you aren't sure, then let us help. We work one-on-one with a limited number of writers and their manuscripts, giving an overall critique as well as line-by-line analysis and copyediting.

Between us, we've been working with writers for over fifty years. We've worked with manuscripts at all stages of development, and we've helped all kinds of writers get the results they deserve. A former student was a finalist for the 1999 National Book Award. Other former students have won The Iowa Award for Short Fiction (2), The Yale Series of Younger Poets Award, Guggenheim (8) and NEA (over 50) Fellowships, and the NCTE Promising Young Writers Award. Together we can polish your manuscript and get it ready for publication.
